COVID-19: Weekly Update 2

National experts in correctional health care and law enforcement will share perspectives and answer questions from participants on COVID-19. This week's panel will focus on: 

·    CDC Interim Guidance on Management of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Correctional and Detention Facilities

·    Initial Results of the NCCHC Study of COVID-19 in Correctional Facilities


About the Presenters


Brent Gibson, MD, MPH, CCHP-P, NCCHC

Dr. Gibson is a board-certified physician executive serving as Chief Health Officer for NCCHC. He previously served as clinical director for the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners where he provided clinical and executive oversight of all non-psychiatric clinical operations. He is a veteran of the United States Army and has been awarded two Meritorious Service Medals for his work while on active duty.


Liesl Hagan, PhD, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Liesl Hagan is an epidemiologist with the CDC. She is detailed to the CDC’s Emergency Operations Center as the POC for corrections, where she led the development of CDC’s Interim Guidance on Management of COVID-19 in Correctional and Detention Facilities. When there is not a pandemic underway, Liesl works in CDC’s Division of Viral Hepatitis, where she develops guidelines for the prevention and control of hepatitis A, B, and C in correctional settings and provides technical assistance to jurisdictions on hepatitis-related data analysis projects including cost-effectiveness studies and programmatic evaluations. She also co-chairs the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention Workgroup on Correctional Health. 


Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian, Middlesex County, Mass.

During his eight years in office, Sheriff Koutoujian has initiated several landmark programs at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office that have garnered national attention. He is a career public servant and president of the Major County Sheriffs of America. The Sheriff also sits on the Advisory Board for the Council on State Governments Justice Center, serves as president of the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association, and is a founding member of Law Enforcement Leaders to Reduce Crime & Incarceration.
