STI Treatment Guidelines: Update on the 2021 Recommendations and Juvenile Considerations - Recorded September 2022


Adolescents in juvenile corrections have among the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections. In 2021, the CDC published updated guidelines regarding treatment for STIs. This webinar will focus on important treatment updates for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium, pelvic inflammatory disease, and recurrent/persistent urethritis in males. Recommendations for STI screening as well as barriers and facilitators to care for adolescents in correctional facilities will be discussed.


Educational Objectives

• Discuss the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections 

• Discuss the screening recommendations and recommended testing modalities for STIs in juvenile correctional facilities

• Recognize the clinical presentation of STIs and develop a treatment plan based on the 2021 STI Treatment Guidelines


Presenters:

Paula K. Braverman, MD, is a professor of pediatrics at UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate and chief of adolescent medicine at Baystate Children’s Hospital. She is board-certified in both Adolescent Medicine and Pediatrics having completed her medical education at Yale University School of Medicine followed by a residency in pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a fellowship in adolescent medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She is a member of NCCHC’s Juvenile Health Committee and the American Academy of Pediatrics liaison to the NCCHC Board of Representatives.  


Cara Wolf, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, is an assistant professor in the Doctor of Nursing program at the University of Utah College of Nursing and a corrections nurse practitioner, providing health care to incarcerated youth in the state of Utah. Dr. Wolf received a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2020 and she has particular interest in screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, as well as human trafficking.
