Dental Care for Geriatric Patients

As people age, their oral health needs change. This is often influenced by decreased access to care, comorbid conditions, decline in cognitive function, loss of manual dexterity and polypharmacy. Older patients experience myriad oral health issues, including periodontal disease, root caries (decay), edentulism and oral cancer. This talk will share insights on how to address these challenges, including a continued focus on prevention.

About the presenter

Dr. Nick Makrides is currently a correctional dental consultant whose career in correctional dentistry spans 33 years. In 1987, he received a commission into the United States Public Health Service and was assigned to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP).  In 2001, he was selected as the BOP’s Chief Dental Officer and served as the Bureau’s lead dentist for 17 years. In 2014, concurrent to his assignment he was selected by the Surgeon General and approved as the Chief Dental Officer of the USPHS and promoted to U.S. Assistant Surgeon General. Dr. Makrides has authored several articles and book chapters on correctional dentistry and represents the American Dental Association on the NCCHC Board of Directors.
