2019 Webinar: NCCHC 2018 Standards for Jails and Prisons: A Year Later

Two years in the making, the 2018 Standards for Health Services for jails and prisons were published in April. The manuals have been revised, reorganized and simplified to create a more user-friendly guide for those using the standards in daily practice. This presentation will focus on the high-level changes to the standards, including an overview of the seven general areas of the standards used in NCCHC’s accreditation program, specific changes in each section and a new, important standard

About the Presenters:
Ms. Tracey Titus has been with NCCHC since 2013 and has worked in correctional health care since 1994. Ms. Titus served as a staff nurse and a health services administrator for a county jail for 19 years. As HSA she was responsible for the overall health services operation including policy development, staff supervision, electronic health records and health training for security staff. She has been a surveyor and lead surveyor for NCCHC since 2008 and served on the board of directors for the Academy of Correctional Health Professionals for three years. Ms. Titus oversees all activities involving accreditation of correctional facilities’ health services, mental health services and opioid treatment programs. She also is a frequent expert speaker at conferences across the country.
Dr. Jeffrey Alvarez is the chief medical officer for the western states for NaphCare. In this role, he oversees all clinical care provided at the region’s jails; serves as the clinical liaison with IT for NaphCare’s electronic health record; and oversees peer review, policy and procedure development, centralized quality control and compliance with the company’s proactive care model, which is aligned with NCCHC standards. Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Alvarez serves on the NCCHC board of directors as the liaison of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He serves on the Accreditation and Standards committee, chaired the 2018 revision of the NCCHC Standards and is a physician surveyor for the accreditation program. Dr. Alvarez continues to see patients at a community opioid treatment center providing medication-assisted therapy to those suffering from substance use disorder.
