Working With Transgender Youth and Adults: The Latest Medical, Mental Health, and Legal Updates
This presentation will provide an overview of medical, mental health, and legal issues pertinent to the care of transgender individuals, with special focus on youths in the juvenile justice system. Mental health topics will include the diagnosis of gender dysphoria, the disproportionate rate of mental health difficulties experienced by transgender youth, evaluations for readiness for medical intervention, and common therapeutic interventions aimed at helping transgender youth. Finally, this presentation will provide insights into the clinical and legal aspects of working with transgender individuals in a correctional setting and making decisions regarding medically necessary interventions to treat dysphoria.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
John Steever, MD, specializes in pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is an associate professor of pediatrics. He also is the primary medical provider of the Transgender Health Project at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. Dr. Steever graduated from George Washington University Medical School and completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. His training focused on providing medical services to high-risk youth, and his current clinical interests include working with youths infected with HIV. Throughout his career he has worked with a diverse patient population, including youth in detention.
Matthew Oransky, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine. He is also on faculty at the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai. Previously, Dr. Oransky was director of psychology training at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, where he also coordinated mental health services for transgender and gender expansive youth. Dr. Oransky received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Fordham University and completed his predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center at the Yale University School of Medicine. He has spoken widely on and published articles on the mental health of transgender youth.
Joel Andrade, PhD, LICSW, CCHP-MH received his PhD and MSW in clinical and forensic social work from Boston College and is licensed in Massachusetts and Florida. He has worked in correctional mental health since 1997 as a mental health professional and director of mental health services for the Massachusetts Department of Correction, and is currently the senior director of behavioral health for Centurion. Dr. Andrade has presented on and published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and a book on correctional health care topics such as gender dysphoria, violence risk assessment, psychopathy, and suicide risk assessment. He has also been an expert witness in cases related to gender dysphoria, suicide risk, violence risk, and involuntary hospitalization.
