Jails and prisons can be settings where people at high risk for infectious diseases may access vaccination. In this webinar, Dr. Spaulding will discuss why offering hepatitis B vaccination in correctional facilities is a fitting public health intervention. When assessing appropriateness of giving a vaccine in a busy correctional health practice, considerations such as dosing schedule become important. Lessons learned from hepatitis B vaccination experiences may be applicable to administration of future vaccines, such as those for HIV and COVID-19.

• Describe the hepatitis B disease burden in adults, including those who reside in or are recently released from jails and
prisons
• Estimate the risk for bloodborne disease, like hepatitis B, versus other routes of disease in U.S. correctional facilities
• Apply lessons learned from strategies for hepatitis vaccination in correctional settings to planning for future vaccines
About the presenter
Dr. Spaulding obtained her M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia and her M.P.H. through John Hopkins. She trained in internal medicine and infectious disease. For the past 22 years, she has focused on correctional health and has authored 100 publications. She served as medical director for the RI Department of Corrections, a combined jail/prison for 6 years. Since 2005 she has been on faculty at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health, where she is currently an Associate Professor of Epidemiology.
