Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the #2 cause of cirrhosis. This talk will examine NAFLD, including its epidemiology, diagnosis and treatments. Topics will include the basics of liver function and NAFLD, along with diagnostic criteria, lab tests and values, and noninvasive tools. Recent guidelines from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases will be presented, with discussion of current treatments as well as the medications coming soon and the expected impact, especially in corrections.


Learning Objectives:

1. Examine liver function tests and normal values

2. Review AASLD guidelines for NAFLD

3. Discuss current treatment vs. use of the many medications that will be out soon


About the Presenter:

Dr. Garth Gulick, is the Chief Medical Officer at Snake River Correctional Institution, Ontario, OR and at Powder River Correctional Institution, Baker City, OR. He has over 16 years of experience is the field of corrections and he is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and American College of Correctional Physicians.
