Continuous Quality Improvement: Putting It All Together

Effective continuous quality improvement programs enable health professionals to analyze health care delivery processes and resultant health outcomes by using a systematic approach to review current processes and identify areas that need improvement. Putting together a comprehensive CQI program takes time and commitment throughout the facility, including interdisciplinary collaboration that empowers all staff to be active participants in providing solutions for improvement. One way to implement a CQI program is by utilizing the Plan, Do, Check, and Act model. With the PDCA model, facility leadership works with staff to conduct audits and studies, analyze the results, conduct a root cause analysis to determine the reason(s) that contributed to the “noncompliance,” and develop a corrective action plan. A successful CQI program infuses quality improvement into daily operations.

About the presenter
Karen Riley, MBA, BSN, is corporate continuous quality improvement director for Centurion, LLC. She began her career as a Navy Nurse Corps officer and then worked as an emergency department director before joining the field of corrections. She has worked in correctional health care for over 12 years as an infirmary nurse, site administrator, and operations leader for several state systems. A Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality, she currently oversees CQI programs for state systems and large jails. She earned her BSN at Old Dominion University and her MBA at the New York Institute of Technology.
