COVID-19 has affected corrections in rates greatly exceeding those in the community. A study by NCCHC and researchers from Harvard Kennedy School indicated a rate of 7,737 per 100,000 inmates compared to a rate of 542 per 100,000 individuals throughout the United States. In addition, individuals with serious underlying medical conditions are at greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19. National experts on correctional health care will share their policies, practices, and perspectives and will answer questions on managing COVID-19 with this vulnerable population. While every correctional facility is unique, this discussion will offer research, information, and ideas practitioners can use to ensure public health and safety during this unprecedented challenge.

About the Presenters
Alysse G. Wurcel, MD, is an assistant professor in the Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Her internal medicine residency was at Massachusetts General Hospital and infection disease fellowship at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and Tufts Medical Center. In addition to her work as an inpatient ID doctor, Dr. Wurcel has an outpatient clinic where she specializes in HIV, HCV, and substance use disorder care. In April she began working as the COVID-19 ID consultant for the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association, overseeing COVID-19 prevention and mitigation in the state’s jails. She has received funding to investigate health disparities in access to COVID-19 testing for health care workers.
Sue Lane, RN, CCHP-A is the infection prevention and control coordinator for Centurion. She is a lead surveyor for NCCHC and has chaired the board of directors for the Academy of Correctional Health Professionals. She has over 30 years experience in infection prevention and control and 20 years in correctional health care. She received her nursing degree from Kennesaw College in Georgia. She speaks at colleges to promote correctional health care careers.
