Clinical and Legal Issues for Corrections After the Dobbs Decision

The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned nearly 50 years of legal precedent, ruling that there is no constitutional right to abortion, giving states full authority to regulate abortion care. How will this change in the legal status of abortion impact correctional facilities? This webinar will review potential clinical and legal implications for correctional facilities. We will discuss how state abortion restrictions may affect not only abortion access for people in custody, but also miscarriage and other pregnancy care that correctional facilities housing pregnant females must provide, including compliance with NCCHC standards.

Educational Objectives

·    Review the number of and outcomes for pregnant people in U.S. correctional facilities

·    Identify how state abortion restrictions can impact correctional facilities’ abilities to provide care to pregnant individuals

·    Discuss the legal foundation of abortion access for incarcerated individuals pre-Dobbs and post-Dobbs
