How to Achieve Success as a Correctional Nurse Manager: A Four-Part Series 


Abstract:

The Nurse Advisory Council of NCCHC’s Multidisciplinary Education Committee has developed a four-part series on correctional nurse manager development. Presented by correctional nurses acknowledged as experts in their field, the series is aimed at the novice correctional nurse manager as well as staff nurses whose next step in their career progression is that role. The presentations will introduce key concepts and skills necessary to become successful nurse managers.


Topics will include:

• Leadership and management

• Human resources skills, including strategies for effective recruitment and retention, performance enhancement, and staff development

• Key organizational elements of the intake process, the initial health assessment, nurse sick call, chronic disease management, medication management, infirmary care, ancillary services, and emergency care

• Implementation, oversight, and monitoring of these critical service areas


Each session will provide time for questions. A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attend all four sessions and successfully complete a knowledge-based evaluation.

Learning Objectives are listed below each session and after completion of each session, the participant should be able to:


Session I: Leadership and Management - Tuesday, August 3 at 1 pm ET; 12 pm CT

Presenter: Mary Muse, MSN, RN, CCHP-RN, CCHP-A

• Differentiate between leadership and management

• Identify three roles and responsibilities of a competent correctional nurse manager

• Discuss three aspects of leading in a correctional setting


Session II: Human Resources - Tuesday, August 10 at 1 pm ET; 12 pm CT

Presenter: Rebecca Pinney, MSN, CCHP-RN, CCHP-A

• Describe five roles of the nurse leader with regard to personnel issues

• Review three aspects of personnel management that are critical to managing correctional nursing staff

• Identify three strategies to use when addressing difficult personnel issues


Session III: Organizational Elements, Implementation, and Monitoring (Part 1) - Tuesday, August 17 at 1 pm ET; 12 pm CT

Presenter: Lori Roscoe, DNP, PhD, APRN, CCHP-RN

• Describe three necessary organizational elements of the intake process, the initial health assessment, nurse sick call, and chronic disease management in an adequate correctional health care program

• Identify three key components in the implementation of the aforementioned processes

• Discuss three aspects of monitoring that should occur for the aforementioned processes


Session IV: Organizational Elements, Implementation, and Monitoring (Part 2) - Tuesday, August 24 at 1 pm ET; 12 pm CT

Presenter: Denise Rahaman, MBA, RN, CCHP-RN, CCHP-A

• Describe three necessary organizational elements of medication management, infirmary care, emergency care, and ancillary services in an adequate correctional health care program

• Identify three key components in the implementation of the aforementioned processes

• Discuss three aspects of monitoring that should occur for the aforementioned processes
