Before the Fever Spreads: Public Health Preparedness in Carceral Settings
Live Broadcast: Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at 10-11am Central Time
Carceral spaces should take note of the worldwide spread of measles. Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases—even more infectious then COVID-19. Several lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and influenza pandemics before that can be applied to measles mitigation strategies. There are also unique public health challenges of measles prevention and response in prisons, jails, and detention centers. This presentation will review important details about measles, including structural factors that heighten outbreak risks in carceral environments and evidence-based strategies for prevention including vaccination. Get specific actions to prepare for measles in your facility or agency.
Learning Objectives
-Identify key factors that increase the risk of measles outbreaks within carceral settings
-Describe evidence-based strategies for preventing and controlling measles transmission in jails, including vaccination protocols and early detection
-Discuss essential steps for effective collaboration between public health authorities and correctional staff in responding to a suspected or confirmed measles case
